DAABON recognized by the “B.E.S.T. In baking” sustainability award program

In October 2016 baking professionals from around the world gathered in Las Vegas to attend the International Baking Industry Exposition (IBIE), an event that takes place only once every three years. At the previous event in 2013, DAABON was proud to be one of the original recipients of the first-ever B.E.S.T. in Baking Awards, created to recognize companies in the baking industry who are leaders in sustainability. In 2016, the IBIE (in collaboration with the Snack Food & Wholesale Bakery publication) once again recognized DAABON, this time with a B.E.S.T. in Baking Honorable Mention.

The program is designed to honor companies that “foster energy conservation, reduced water usage, a decrease in landfill waste, healthy living and/ or a reduction of the overall impact on the environment.” The IBIE “has identified sustainability as one of the baking industry’s top priorities,” and others agree. Food Business News reports that sustainability will continue to be a top trend in North America in 2017. DAABON’s comprehensive sustainability program encompasses all of the facets of B.E.S.T. in Baking Award, as well as many others. For example, DAABON’s oil production process is carbon negative as a result of a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) which converts liquid effluent from our extraction mill into methane gas that powers our own facility and sends extra energy back to the grid.

In addition, DAABON carefully measures water usage levels and water quality to ensure minimal water use that does not affect the quality or safety of the water. DAABON also utilizes a very robust recycling and composting program which minimizes waste and returns nutrients to the soil of our palm farms in a natural and conscientious way. DAABON’s sustainability program includes additional components, such as social and community support designed to help diversify income and educate children in our local communities.
