The world’s tallest mountain range near an ocean, the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta, produces one of the mildest and richest Organic Colombian coffees. The deep-rooted tradition of coffee plantations in Sierra Nevada dates back to the end of the 19th century, making good use of this unique strategic location and climatic diversity of that region.

The local climate allows for just one harvest to take place during the year from the end of October through the end of March. This guarantees a highly homogenized harvest. Prolonged summer conditions help keep plagues and diseases away. This has helped preserve our original Arabica Typica variety which is elsewhere extinct in Colombia.

The Sierra Nevada coffee bean is naturally larger in size than in other Colombian regions. This translates into a coffee of unique fragrance and aroma. The excellent water quality used in the plantations also accentuates the unique characteristics of acidity, body and taste.

Indigenous People and Environment

Since coffee is one of the only sources of income for the local communities of the Sierra Nevada, all family members of these indigenous communities and local farmers participate in the harvest and therefore in the benefits produced, thus improving the social conditions of people in this region.

It is worth mentioning the contribution the coffee plantations provide to maintaining the biodiversity. The required shading for coffee plantations ensures we plant native trees and agro-productive species similar to the original forest vegetations, which in turn improves the fauna habitat and bird migrations.

Production and Safety

In 2003 Daabon Group produced and exported 1,150 tons of organic certified green coffee beans from 3 privately owm farms. By 2005 we expect a production of as much as 1,700 tons. Our Tolima, Onaca and Manzanales farms are already certified by Rainforest Alliance in addition to our Ecocert (Europe & NOP) and JAS certifications.

At our reception and storage warehouse in Santa Marta, we keep a computerized record of each farm, its production history and assign a lot number when we receive the coffee from each farmer. This enables us to clearly trace any coffee bag to its origin and provide our customers with a detailed history of the product from the seed to his warehouse.
